The Passion of Christ in the Modena Cathedral

Inside the Modena Cathedral, a marble parapet tells the story of the Passion of Christ. The work is attributed to the so-called “Campionese Masters”, skilled sculptors and builders originally from the city of Campione d’Italia – currently in Swiss territory but part of the Como diocese at the time – who were active between the 12th and 14th centuries in Northern Italy, and who were hired in 1167 to complete the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Mary of the Assumption.

In the first half of the 13th century, one member of the group, Anselmo da Campione, created with his students the parapet near the presbytery with magnificent bas-reliefs that portray the Evangelists, Doctors of the Church, and the last hours of Jesus on Earth.

The gallery below is only a small selection of these masterpieces.
