The paradox of the Ducati RR 3404.1 ”breadbox”

The Ducati RR 3404.1 is an elegant pear tree wood radio, nicknamed “Breadbox” (‘Paniere’) due to its profile.

The famous Bologna-based company started manufacturing it in the early 1940s, when the economic difficulties tied to the war swamped Italy.

In those years, ration cards were distributed to Italian citizens, implementing a point system that restricted consumption of even the most essential goods – including bread.

So while real breadboxes started to clear out, the Ducati RR 3404.1 paradoxically beamed with triumphant news and light, popular songs.
