Here is a 1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider “Sophia”, one of the most elegant and famous racing cars ever created by the Milanese carmaker.
The Giulietta Spider – of which 1,400 were produced between 1955 and 1962 – was designed in the mid-1950s after Alfa Romeo’s American importer had asked to develop a roadster version of the Giulietta Sprint to sell in the United States.
Various car designers were consulted, until – perhaps unsurprisingly – the concept that least complied with American aesthetics was chosen, highlighting instead an indomitable Italian-style profile.
The winning design was by Pinifarina, who had drawn inspiration from one of the most beautiful cars ever made: the famous Lancia Aurelia B24.
Another victory for Italian style.
