The Moretti 1200 Spider was the creation of Giovanni Michelotti, a great designer born in Turin.
Moretti S.p.A. had been founded by Giovanni Moretti in 1925, with headquarters in Borgata Lesna, one of the Piedmontese capital’s northern districts. Over time, the automaker had specialized in so-called “minicars” (also known as “city cars”). It released various fine micro vehicles – including the famous Cita in 1946 – which however, in the mid-1950s, were eclipsed by Fiat models 500 and 600. At that point, Moretti decided to focus exclusively on high-end models.
Michelotti’s Moretti 1200 Spider – manufactured by Vignale and presented to the public at the 1955 Brussels Auto Show – was perhaps the most beautiful and significant example emerging from this new strategic direction.
