The 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ Coda Tonda

Here is the 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ, also known as Coda Tonda (“round tail”) because of its rounded back section.

As one of the 210 Giulietta SZ models manufactured between 1959 and 1963 by the Milan-based carmaker, it bears the SZ acronym standing for “Sport Zagato – which comes from the name of designer Elio Zagato (Milan, 1921-2009), who in 1957 was asked to rebuild the body of a Giulietta Sprint Veloce that had been destroyed in Tuscany, near Radicofani, during the 1956 Mille Miglia.

Zagato’s creation was officially presented at the 1960 Geneva Motor Show. Made in aluminum alloy, it was definitely more streamlined than the Sprint Veloce and lighter (785 kilograms, after “loosing” some 130).
