Reschio is located in Lisciano Niccone, a small town nestled between Umbria’s rolling hills: it is a castle with a history that spans millennia, but also a historical estate with fifty farmhouses which, over the years, turned into wonders of design thanks to the vision of their owners.
It all started in 1994, when count Antonio Bolza purchased the entire 1,500-hectare estate, with its quiet atmosphere and wonderful views. Over time, he and his wife decided to renovate the houses and open them to people who shared their love for art, tranquility and solitude, and who wished to move to the pristine Italian countryside.
Their son Benedikt Bolza, an internationally renowned designer who was named amongst the most influential 100 in the world by Readers’ Digest, led the renovation of both the farmsteads and the 10th-century castle. The former turned into incredible examples of interior decor creativity, while the latter emerged from a long period of abandonment to start a new life as the Hotel Castello di Reschio.
La Tabaccaia is certainly a highlight in Benedikt Bolza’s project. The space was recovered from an old tobacco factory, and turned into a creative smithy where the designer’s team curates all the interiors and furniture projects for B.B for Reschio – a brand that started with a simple bronze table and now includes handmade pieces made of steel, leather, brass and wood. La Tabaccaia is a work of art in and of itself, with tall, industrial-style ceilings and wide and elegant spaces, which often host art exhibitions showcasing pieces by names such as Nic Fiddian Green and Lindy Guinness.
Everything in Reschio stems from constant dialogue between contemporary fine hospitality and the heritage of an ancient past, which is said to have roots as far back as the Etruscan age. Indeed, the name of the estate itself probably comes from Resculum, which is Latin for “fortification” and referred to the splendid castle we see today.
