Pollara: a beautiful sunset, caught between the sky and the sea

On Salina, an island in the municipality of Malfa, a thin strip of land made of stones and gravel – the remains of an ancient, partially-collapsed volcanic crater – makes up one of the most wonderful beaches in the Aeolian archipelago: Pollara.

A steep pathway leads you from the hamlet of the same name to an amphitheater-like structure, nestled on a cliff that is the perfect spot to admire what has been described as “one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world”: watch the sun, like a ball of fire, disappear near the islands of Filicudi and Alicudi. Looking out at the sea, you’ll notice the faraglione that “guards” the small village of Pollara.

Next to the beach, a stone staircase leads to another charming site: “Le Balate”, an ancient boat shelter with characteristic huts that seem almost carved into the stone. It is a magical and poetic place, like something out of a painting.

If fact, it was the set for some scenes in “The Postman”, one of the movies that make up Italy’s incredible cinema heritage, nominated for five Academy Awards in 1996 and awarded the Oscar for Best Original Score.
