Palio del Golfo in La Spezia: let the race begin

The thirteen historic villages facing the so-called Gulf of Poets – from Tellaro to Porto Venere – face off at sea every year: the Palio del Golfo, an annual boat race taking place in front of the beautiful La Spezia, Liguria, will return for its 2018 edition on August 6th.

Two thousand meters, rounding the mark three times, with four oarsmen and one helmsman for each of the thirteen boats in the race: these are the figures of a thrilling competition that has returned every year, almost without exception, since 1925. The prize is the longed-for ‘Palio’, a decorated banner that the winning ‘borgata’ can showcase for the year.

The Palio del Golfo is the most important event in Festa del Mare, which begins with a lively float parade (on August 3, this year) and includes the formal inspection of the boats, made by local specialized artisans, the day before the race.

With the 2018 Palio del Golfo almost here, the promenade in La Spezia is ready to welcome the many visitors who will come enjoy the show from a ringside seat.
