Pistoia-born photographer Aurelio Amendola published his photos of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s “Pietà” in Vatican City in 2014, on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the great sculptor’s death (1475-1564).
Amendola is an art photographer who’s gained great experience with Michelangelo’s works, documenting “David” (in the Gallery of the Academy of Florence), his sculptures in the Medici Chapels in Florence, and the Rondanini Pietà.
Here are some splendid images of the masterpiece created by the Tuscan sculptor when he was barely in his twenties, between 1497 and 1499, during his first stay in Rome.
In 2014, Amendola held a show in the Medici Chapel showcasing some twenty blow-ups which he then published in his book “Michelangelo. La dotta mano” (Fmr-Utet).
The “Pietà” is kept in the first chapel in the right aisle of the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican.
