Rovereto is the main location of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto. Inspired by Rome’s Pantheon, the Mart’s designers – Ticinese architect Mario Botta and Roveretan engineer Giulio Andreolli – created a radial dome in Plexiglas and steel, leaving one triangular segment out: an opening that seems to be the missing link in a circular net, an escape hatch towards the sky.
After all, art and escapes are related. ”There is no safer way to escape from the world than art”, Goethe said, hastening to add: ”but there is no safer link with the world than art”.
The Mart features futuristic engineering solutions that live in harmony with classical overtones, such as the outside wall covering in the same yellow stone traditionally used by Palladio, designed so that each slab can be replaced independently of the others. The structure is home to a permanent collection of 15,000 works of art – sculptures, drawings and engravings – including some of the masterpieces by Morandi, De Chirico, Carrà and Depero, which steer the museum towards a particular focus on the 1900s Avant-garde.
Enter the Mart, for your chance to escape the world and yet link yourself to it, inextricably.
