Since June 16th and until November 4th 2018, Palermo is hosting “Manifesta 12” – a nomadic contemporary art biennial that since the 1990s has moved across Europe, to promote a site-specific cultural project with the main goal of giving a new interpretation of the relationships between culture and society, through constant dialogue with the fabric of society.
The initiative showcases new creative experiences that the cultural and artistic community has conceived in close relationship with the festival’s local context.
“Manifesta 12” was founded in Amsterdam by Dutch art historian Hedwig Fijen, who still runs it, right after the end of the Cold War, when Europe was facing sudden changes in economy, politics and culture and new scenarios of social integration.
This year’s organizers have chosen Palermo for its representation of two important themes that identify contemporary Europe: migration and climate change and how these issues impact our cities
