Here is Venice as Francesco Ferruccio Leiss (1892-1968) saw it in his dreams. The great Ligurian photographer dedicated large part of his work to the beautiful city on the lagoon, immortalizing the major tourist destination as a dream-like place, enveloped in the fog, dotted by blurry lights and decorated with nocturnal, geometric shadows.

Together with the images by Fulvio Roiter and Gianni Berengo Gardin, Leiss’s are some of the most evocative portraits of one of the most beloved places in the world.

Here is a small selection of his photographs of Venice.
