Earth and gold by Fontana, at Galleria Borghese

“Lucio Fontana. Earth and Gold” is an exhibition Galleria Borghese is dedicating to a specific part of the famous Argentinian-Italian painter, ceramicist and sculptor’s production: the gold “Spatial Concepts” and the ceramic “Crucifixions”. After shows focusing on great international figures like Bacon, Giacometti and Picasso, Fontana is the first 20th-century Italian artists to be showcased in the Roman Museum.

The exhibition includes approximately fifty pieces, including gold oil paintings and ceramics mainly created between 1958 and 1968, which are displayed between the Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces that make up the gallery’s collection. Thus, visitors are effectively put in front of a timeless issue in artistic research: the concept of “space”, its definition, and artists’ restless search for its representation.

Gold and earth are the focus elements in the title of the exhibition, now extended until 25 August: gold, as a spatial component summing up light and space, but also as a virgin raw matter in its primordial mix with mud.
