Archivio Rubelli: the history of Made in Italy interiors in the world

by Barbara Palladino

Brocade, velvet, silk, damask: Rubelli has always created high-end fabrics destined to famous buildings, historical homes, embassies and museums all over the world. Many of the Venetian company’s creations have been the result of collaborations with renowned architects and designers, from Guido Cadorin to Gio Ponti, from Vittorio Zecchin to Umberto Bellotto. Amongst the most famous projects are Rubelli’s silk velvets for the Royal House in the early 1900s, the Aurum fabric weaved with silk and gold thread for the curtain of the Bolshoi Theater, and the material designed for Tiffany’s shop windows, decorated with constellations inspired by “The Stars” by noted Murano artist Vittorio Zecchin in the 1930s.

The company was founded in the second half of the 1800s, when Venice experienced a strong resurgence of craftsmanship. Since the beginning, the Rubelli Historical Collection and Archives began forming, headquartered in Ca’ Pisani Rubelli. Today, the collection counts over 6,000 textile documents, ranging from the late 15th century to the first half of the 20th and including specimens from Africa, the Americas and the Far East.

The archive is dedicated not only to fabrics but also to sketches, preliminary designs and approximately 2,000 technical weaving cards, embellished with hand painting and dating back to the period between the late 19th century and the 1950s.
On top of being important historical sources, Rubelli’s documents to this day help designers and researchers find infinite inspiration for their work.
