The Pirelli Calendar by Paolo Roversi: “Looking for Juliet”

by Barbara Palladino

Born in 1964 as a non-commercial product, initially destined to be a present only for a few VIPs and selected clients, the Pirelli Calendar is now in its 45th edition and, over 50 years, has become a coveted collector’s item, if not a work of art admired in the whole world.

Collaborating with the best photographers of our age certainly helped: Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh, Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Patrick Demarchelier and Steven Meisel are only some of the 35 famous names that have signed “The Cal” since its inception; in front of the camera, they portrayed top models from Natal’ja Vodjanova to Mariacarla Boscono, from Gisele Bündchen to Karolína Kurková, from Kate Moss to Naomi Campbell – and even some “veterans” like Isabeli Fontana, who posed for no less than nine editions.

The 2020 calendar has been entrusted to Italian photographer Paolo Roversi, who will reveal his vision for the year through “Looking for Juliet”: a project calling upon actresses and singers to represent Shakespeare’s eternal icon, in an ideal research for youth and beauty.
Actresses Mia Goth, Claire Foy, Emma Watson, Indya Moore, Yara Shahidi and Kristen Stewart; singers Chriss Lee (Chinese) and Rosalia (Spanish); and French-Italian artist Stella Roversi: each of these female figures will be “on stage” to play the part of the immortal lover, putting her personality, talent and emotions in front of the camera.

Roversi’s project was inspired by William Shakespeare’s drama and by the blend of love, strength, youth and beauty it represents. But when asked whether he had found his Juliet, he replied, “I am still looking for my Juliet and will look for her my whole life. Because Juliet is a dream.
