The Cavalcata Sarda: Sardinia’s traditions parade through Sassari

Yesterday in Sassari, the 69th edition of the Cavalcata Sarda began! It’s an important 4-day folk festival that will fill the capital of Northern Sardinia with vibrant colors and sounds from Thursday, May 17th to Sunday, May 20th 2018.

No less than 270 horsemen, 65 folk and heritage groups from as many municipalities, and 2,000 walk-ons will come to the island to bring a musical and choreographic show to life. It’s a tradition that developed into an increasingly rich and interesting event over the years – apparently, the Cavalcata was first held in 1899, when king Umberto I and his wife Margherita of Savoy came to visit Sassari.

The top event of the festival will be held on Sunday (the second-last of the month of May, as per tradition), when the cavalcade will parade along the city’s streets and through its squares – where you can also enjoy Pariglie acrobatic shows, as well as Sardinia’s typical singing and dancing.
