Penone’s “Matrice” in Fendi’s Square Colosseum
Fifteen installations by Piedmontese artist Giuseppe Penone will be on display until July 16th 2017 in the monumental spaces of Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in Rome (also known as Palazzo della Civiltà del Lavoro), the famous travertine “Square Colosseum” built in the EUR district between the 1930s and 1940s.
The building is headquarters to the Fendi Group, which was able to bring the works of this most famous contemporary artist to the public in an exhibition curated by Massimiliano Gioni.
The installations were created between the 1970s and the present; some have never been shown, others are new for the Italian public.
The exhibition, titled “Matrice”, celebrates the transformative powers of nature, described with a vocabulary of live and organic matter that unexpectedly flourishes inside a building known for its solid, stern architecture.
