Merano’s Thermal Baths
When designing Merano’s Thermal baths, architect Matteo Thun was inspired by Goethe’s synesthetic ideals: “Just like you can see with the tip of your fingers, you can also touch with your eyes… we kept this in mind when working on the project. At the same time, looking at the city and all of its beauty from the 1800s and 1900s, we tried to guess the nature of its future soul. I think the outcome is something unique, not only in Italy but in the whole world“.
Since 2005, in this transparent steel and glass shell – in an ongoing dialog with the seasons and their changeful colors – 13 pools of saline spring water, saunas, “snow rooms”, vapor and aromatherapy baths have been making the synesthesia described by the Bolzano-born architect a reality, pleasantly engaging with all five senses (the pools are equipped with underwater music).
Located along the South bank of the Passirio, the structure is surrounded by a 50,000-square-meter park, which features more pools and is a meeting point for local residents and visitors of this wonderful corner of Trentino-Alto Adige.
