Merano’s municipal theater, a triumph of Jugendstil
The “Puccini” Municipal Theater in Merano first opened on December 1st 1900, with a performance of Goethe’s “Faust”.
Built over a mere 14 months, it was designed by German architect Martin Dülfer (1859-1942) – an important figure in Jugendstil – who after this first theater at the age of forty went on to work on those in Lübeck, Dortmund and Sofia.
The Stadttheater Meran – dedicated to the Lucca-born composer during the Fashist period – is a masterpiece of architecture decorated with friezes, stuccos and frescos.
Beyond the Neoclassic style façade, discover its triumph of Art Nouveau, with original furniture from the early 20th century.
