Artists’ homes in Civita di Bagnoregio
The idea was simple yet brilliant: renovate old abandoned apartments with a large dose of creativity. Unfortunately, there are plenty of empty houses in the wonderful village of Civita di Bagnoregio, Viterbo, a medieval gem that over the past decades has been deserted due to the erosion of the tuff stone on which it was built centuries ago.
The “artists’ home” pilot project was launched also to protect and bring back value to this territory, when mayor Francesco Bigiotti entrusted design studio Dwa with renovating an old municipal building, so it could be rented out online through the popular Airbnb platform.
The artists who collaborated on this beautiful project – Alberto Artesani and Frederik De Wachter – used materials made by fashion, luxury and design companies.
Thanks to these clever and talented people, Civita di Bagnoregio is ready for a new future. Our hope is that their story goes “viral”, to use Internet’s jargon, and that perhaps other beautiful and forgotten places in Italy might be inspired to emulate their story.
